Change Your Food = Change Your Life: An article by Rachel Yellin

When I was a kid, there was a commercial with a man in a blue-sequence martian suit, walking up to a model spaceship. In a funny space-man voice, he said:

“Hi. I’m Robolar. I’m from Mars. And I eat all kinds of candy bars. (He walks over to the spaceship, and opens the top of it. There is a bowl of fruit) Hmmm… What’s this? Some Earth fruit. (He bites an apple) MMMM, it’s good. Mmmm, it’s better than good. It’s yummy and not bad. Wait til I tell the other martians about this. We’re only eating candy bars we don’t know what me miss.” Ok, seriously, I just looked it up on youtube.

To this day, I, along with one of my sisters, do this little routine from memory. It’s embedded. And sadly, I didn’t listen. I became an instant potato spuds, Total Cereal with skim milk, Lean Cuisine, iceberg lettuce, Entenmann’s chocolate-chip cookie fiend. I can still see the blue, cursive writing on that box of cookies and volunteering to unpack the groceries so I could open the box and put them in the cookie jar while sneaking several for myself. Not only did I have trouble maintaining a healthy weight for most of my life, but I also developed a host of symptoms like anxiety, depression, PMS, headaches, not to mention the autoimmune disease that my lifestyle now revolves around.

So we all know that eating things that grow in the ground and on trees is good for us, but what’s the first thing that goes when we get busy? Things that grow in the ground and on trees. Take a moment and think about what you ate in the last 24 -48 hours. What constitutes your diet? How much of your diet is coming from the ground or a tree? Of the animal foods that you’re eating, are those animals eating what their digestive system was designed to eat?

An then there were Snackwells. Remember those low fat cookies? And then there was Fleishman’s margarine. Remember the butter substitutes that so many people still eat even after TIME Magazine published their article about why butter is better?

Do you try to reduce your fat intake because you’re trying to lose weight or don’t want to gain weight? Did you know that you need healthy fats in order to fuel your body, store energy, absorb certain nutrients, have proper cell structure, and optimize nerve, brain and heart function?

I won’t carry on and on here, but what I will do is call your attention to the connection between what you eat and how you feel.

For example:

  • Do you crave particular foods at a certain time of day?
  • Do you have anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, irritability, etc?
  • Does your skin, inner ear, genitals, or scalp itch?
  • Are you having trouble sleeping?
  • Do you have blood sugar problems?
  • Do your joints hurt and feel inflamed?

The food we eat gives our bodies the “information” and materials they need to function properly. If we don’t get the right information, our metabolic processes suffer and our health declines. If we get too much food, or food that gives our bodies the wrong instructions, we can not only become over or underweight, but also end up with so many of the symptoms listed above, along with diseases. food acts as medicine to maintain, prevent, and treat disease.

So with that… here is the pep talk:

  • What you eat matters.
  • Ask yourself, “If my body were to completely regenerate over the next 7 years, would I want my body to be made out of this food that I’m about to eat?”
  • Another way to handle this is do what Michael Pollan says. “Only eat it if your great grandmother knows what it is”.
  • Another way to guide yourself is “If the bugs don’t eat it because of all the chemicals, why should I”.
  • Another way to guide yourself is “if it ate something not native to it’s diet, skip it”. Like, cows eating corn. NOT a good idea.
  • Lastly, if the seed it came from had wacky things done to it in a laboratory… you might just skip that too. That would be genetically modified food.

Now, all of the above is just the start for people who are pretty healthy.

If you have any of the symptoms mentioned above, or are living with some disease that’s already been diagnosed, you’re likely going to need a practitioner to help you figure out what’s actually going on in your body. You’d need tests to find out what your vitamin and mineral levels are and what you’re absorbing and what you’re not. You’d also need to test for food sensitivities. And then, the question is how does it all fit together and what is the action plan to FEEL BETTER. There are lots of practitioners out there who are excellent. And, the person who helped me get so much of my life back, is Anne Fischer Silva from A New Leaf Nutrition. Anne is a Restorative Wellness Specialist and Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. There are many resources to help you feel better. I’ve included a bunch below. I want to share with you a day in my diet. I include this so you have a picture of what a nutritious diet looks like. This is what I ate in the last 24 hours: Casava & coconut flour wrap

Before I finish, I’d love to share with you what has changed for me over the last 5 years by changing my food, taking supplements, reducing my work-load, becoming more active, and continuing to do my spiritual practices.

Better sleep, no panic attacks, only rare anxiety, significantly reduced depression, hashimotos’ antibodies have gone down, thyroid is stable, no more hair loss, no more bad breath, no more itching, no more headaches, I can fly without feeling sick, I get sick much less frequently, I have lost over 20 pounds and maintained LESS than what I thought was my ideal weight for nearly a year, I have significantly less joint pain, PMS symptoms have reduced (I only cry one day, instead of a whole week!), and most of all, I’m much more of the person I’m supposed to be, rather than a person who is just trying so hard to simply be ok.
