More about this Doula

As a doula in San Francisco for nearly 2 decades and have been a part of more than 450 births; I’ve been steeped in years of yoga, bodywork, Buddhism, hypnosis and shamanistic explorations. My passion as a doula is in teaching (and practicing) deep, mindful self care. I have devoted my life to helping people prepare for birth and parenting through yoga, relaxation, self awareness and a steadfast dedication to their intentions. I aim to create a safe and loving container within each family, witnessing and claiming their own power, embracing pregnancy and birth as a conscious rite of passage. In my free time, I play in the ocean, dance, and hike with my dog.

More about this Doula

My journey towards this work began before I even knew what a doula was. After having my own amazing and empowering birth experience 24 yrs ago I started supporting births as a friend and learned that there was such a thing as a Doula. I’d always worked with children and families in some sort of care or educator capacity but never anything as life changing as this work! Now 15 years and over 475 births later I’m still honored and excited to bring my training, knowledge, maternal instincts, heart, and hands into the homes and birth rooms of my clients. I support you in choosing what is right for you and where and how you want to birth your baby. When I’m not supporting families, I’m snuggling with my cats, my own family, swimming, and traveling.

Juliana Birnbaum

More about this Doula

I am an experienced, certified Midwife Assistant, Birth and Postpartum Doula with a background in Prenatal Yoga. In 2017, I celebrated having attended my 100th delivery. The families I have supported have had an intervention and Cesarean rate far lower than national averages. I taught in pre and postnatal yoga programs at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, and at numerous studios in San Francisco, the East Bay, and Marin. I am a proud mother of two home-birthed daughters, and began work as a birth-keeper in 2006. I was the first graduate of Oakland’s Cornerstone Doula School, one of the most rigorous programs in the country, focusing on natural birth and a holistic model of care.
In 2011, I apprenticed with Leopi Sanderson-Edmunds, a highly-respected, licensed midwife who has attended over 1000 births (including joyfully welcoming both of Juliana’s daughters). Certified in 2012 as a Midwife Assistant through the Midwives College of Utah, I am currently licensed in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation. I believe birthing has the potential to be a magical and empowering rite of passage, and works to support optimal experiences for women and their families, both at home and in the hospital. I am also an author of two books related to natural living, one on medicine and one on sustainable design and intentional communities.

More about this Doula

After being profoundly moved by the births of my own children, I began to offer lots of options and choices to my friends when they were expecting. It surprised me how very little my friends and family knew about their birth options. I could tell I was being pulled into the birth world as the more conversations I had the more I wanted to help others with their choices surrounding prenatal, birth and postpartum issues. Eventually I left my career in marketing to begin my life’s passion of helping women and their partners find their voice. I am a DONA trained doula with additional training in Yes To Birth with Rachel Yellin, Hypnobirthing, The Bradley Method, Spinning Babies, When Survivors Give Birth, and Lactation support. My peaceful demeanor, experience and genuine care will leave you with a strong base and level of support that is heartfelt. I have been a caretaker my entire life but have finally figured out the best use of my energy and passion- to take care of families through prenatal, birth, postpartum and beyond..

I approach birth in the way that I wish someone had held my hand and explained to me previous to my own births, with delight and empowerment. Birth should be anticipated with joy and awareness. I love being a part of labor and birth. I am always overwhelmed by the beauty and miracle of birth and the strength and joy of moms as they meet their babies for the first time. I am humbled to be a part of such an amazing and intimate experience..

Doula Since 2013

More about this Doula

My introduction into the birth world started at age 10 when my midwife-next-door-neighbor invited me to her daughter’s birthday party. We all crowded around the television to watch the home-video of her daughter’s birth, I loved it. While in college, I pursued a degree in Gender and Women Studies at UC Berkeley. Diving deep into feminist theory is what drove me to pursue doula work and what informs my practice today. I became certified as a doula 2013 and enrolled in Midwifery school at National Midwifery Institute in 2017. Outside of birth work, I enjoy gardening, hiking, drinking tea, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I began my practice as a doula for 22 births of friends and family members. Using my knowledge of dance, movement and instinctual sense of what positions were needed, all but one of these mamas delivered naturally and in under 12 hours of labor! As a mother, I have experienced the intensity of labor and understand the particular needs of a mother in labor. As the grandmother of a teenager and mom of two independent adult children; they are on their own! This allows me a lot more time to spend with my clients.

More about this Doula

My passion as a doula – even more than welcoming new babies into the world – is to witness and support the transformation of people into parents. Utilizing my nurturing skills in combination with a scientific background (I hold a BA in Computer Science and Psychology from UC Berkeley), my approach is evidence-based and rooted in the belief that childbearing is a fundamentally healthy and normal part of adult life. While I spent over a year as an apprentice midwife, attending homebirths with Michelle Welborn, LM, CPM, I don’t believe that there is one “right” way to birth, but that everyone deserves to be informed, supported, and respectfully cared for as they make the choices that are best for their family. I love sparking questions, allaying fears, exploring options, and helping my clients navigate through the jargon of modern birth. I am a mother of two teenage boys, and while I have lived in three different countries (US, Israel & Iran), I have spent the majority of my adult life in SF.

More about this Doula

I believe pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period are deeply transformative times in a person’s life. I am there to support you with information, inspiration and emotional and physical support every step of the way. I whole heartedly believe in supporting every individual in whatever choice is right for them as well as doing my best to guide them to ask questions, seek for help and research any issues they encounter. Every person that has given birth deserves to look back at their experience and feel that they were heard, valued and supported throughout the process no matter the outcome.I am a mother to two girls (aged 2 & 4 years old) and realized my passion for supporting pregnant people upon having my first baby. Four months after the birth of my first daughter I took a birth doula training which immersed me into the birth world and I never looked back. I have been an RN since 2011 and last year started Certified Nurse Midwifery school. Being with people during pregnancy, birth and postpartum is truly a privilege and my goal is to have you leave your birth experience feeling empowered and excited to take on your new role as a parent as well as any other role that you may play in life.

More about this Doula

I’ve always loved birth! My mom was a childbirth educator, so I was lucky enough to grow up with expectant parents practicing breathing techniques and birthing positions in our living room every Tuesday night. Becoming a doula was the most natural thing in the world for me, and I’ve loved every sweaty, beautiful second of it since. As part of the birth justice movement, I believe that all parents deserve an empowering and celebrated birth experience regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, body type, or religion. I’m based out of the East Bay, and I offer experienced guidance, compassionate encouragement, and strong advocacy as you come into your power as a birther.
